Lisa Hanna, Member of Parliament for South East St. Ann, has moved a resolution calling for reggae icon Bob Marley to be named a national hero.

In moving the resolution in the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon, Miss Hanna noted the global impact of Marley's music.

She pointed out that One Love was named the song of the millennium and his messages have spurred movements for revolutionary social change to improve conditions for the disenfranchised and black people.

Miss Hanna called for steps to be taken to bestow the honour on Marley this year:

"Be it resolved that this Honourable House, in Jamaica's 60th year of independence, call upon the Governor General to take the necessary steps for the national honour of Order of National Hero to be conferred on the international crusader for peace, love and equality, a global superstar, the Honourable Robert Nesta 'Bob' Marley," she announced.

In December, Opposition Senator Floyd Morris tabled a motion in the Senate for Bob Marley as well as Jimmy Cliff, Louise Bennett Coverley (Miss Lou) and Usain Bolt to be named national heroes ahead of Jamaica's diamond independence celebrations this year.
