Prime Minister of the Bahamas Dr. Hubert Minnis on Monday night announced he had accepted the resignation of his embattled Health Minister, Dr. Duane Sands, and promised to make a further statement on the issue later.
Dr. Minnis said he will announce Dr. Sands' replacement on Tuesday.
Dr. Sands offered his resignation Monday evening after accepting responsibility for the decision to allow permanent residents to enter the country during a strict border closure that has left Bahamians stranded abroad.
In his letter of resignation, Dr. Sands said the controversy has caused embarrassment and he acknowledged that he acted outside of the scope of his authority.
Bahamas, like many Caribbean countries, has closed its airports in a bid to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
