Barbados extends COVID-19 related State of Emergency

The Barbados Parliament has given the green light for a further extension of the state of emergency as the country contends with a new wave of cases linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health Minister Ian Gooding-Edghill, who piloted the Resolution on the Emergency Management Act, said the measure will remain in effect until September 22.

Mr Gooding-Edghill said the move is necessary due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and the evolving variant.

Last week, Barbados confirmed the presence of the new Omicron BA.2 variant of COVID-19 as the country responds to a dramatic increase in the number of new cases.
