Belize reaffirms support for Taiwan as an independent nation

Belize has restated its commitment to recognise the Republic of China, also known as Taiwan as a "sovereign and independent nation" after Honduras earlier this week announced it was shifting its allegiance to China.

The Belize government says it will work with Taiwan to strengthen bilateral relations based on shared values, the respect for the rule of law and mutual interests.

Beijing has been urging countries to adopt its "One China" policy and not recognise Taiwan, which it regards as a renegade province.

On Tuesday, Honduras President Xiomara Castro announced that her government will seek to establish diplomatic relations with China, which would imply severing relations with Taiwan.

Political observers say the switch would leave Taiwan recognised by only 13 countries as Beijing spends billions of dollars to win recognition for its "One China" policy.
