Bunting rejects resignation calls

Opposition senator Peter Bunting has asserted that he will not resign from his public roles amid the controversy surrounding the issuance of  firearm licences.

Calls have been made for Mr. Bunting to step away from the Senate following an Integrity Commission report last week that he and another former national security minister, Robert Montague, granted gun licences to people with criminal traces, after they were turned down by the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA).

But speaking Monday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, Mr. Bunting, Leader of Opposition Business in the Senate, brushed aside the calls for him to step down.

"Absolutely not," was his firm response to host Dionne Jackson Miller when the resignation question asked.

He reiterated that, in relation to the decisions he made to reverse the FLA's earlier refusal to grant firearm licences to two persons, he was advised by a highly competent board, comprised of respected professionals, who gave due consideration to all the relevant facts.

Mr. Montague has resigned as a minister without portfolio in the wake of  the Integrity Commission report.
