Children's Advocate: Caregivers should be proactive in protecting children from danger

Children's Advocate Diahann Gordon Harrison

Children's Advocate Diahann Gordon Harrison wants caregivers to take proactive steps to prevent incidents similar to Sunday's house fire in which three children died in Walkerswood, St. Ann.

Seven year-old Tashawna Mattis, a grade 2 student and two of her siblings, four year-old Tashawnie and two year-old Tavarno perished in the blaze.

Commissioner of the Jamaica Fire Brigade Stewart Beckford had indicated that the grandmother reported that the house had no electricity and was being lit by lamps.

Mrs Gordon Harrison, responding Monday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said parents and guardians should make an effort not to continue the repetitive cycle of preventable house fires.
