Bishop Dr. Alvin Bailey
President of the Jamaica Evangelical Alliance, Bishop Dr. Alvin Bailey, has joined the list of critics and groups who have called for a roll back of the salary increases to parliamentarians.
Speaking at a church service in Portmore, St. Catherine on Sunday, Bishop Bailey described the increases as disgraceful and unacceptable, saying they come at a time when workers in the public and private sectors are being forced to take low wages.
Dr. Bailey, who is Bishop of the Holiness Christian Church, said the move was insensitive to the plight of Jamaicans.
He argued that politicians should have the people's best interest at heart but criticised the Andrew Holness administration for behaving in a "shameful" manner.
Bishop Bailey also blasted members of the parliamentary opposition and their leader Mark Golding for accepting the increases.
"They have taken it. I have seen them walk out of Parliament for less than this. I have seen them vigorously opposing actions that are less than this, yet they have [taken] it and they are flip-flopping."
The bishop said Mr. Golding's decision to keep only 20 per cent of his pay increase and donate the rest until the government addresses the issues of other public sector workers is also unacceptable.
"Nothing short of a roll back of this increase is acceptable to us the Jamaican people. Roll back to more moderate increases that reflect sensitivity to the limitations in our economic performance as a nation and as a country," he demanded.
