Cockpit Country officially a protected area

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

The Cockpit Country is now officially a protected area by law.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness yesterday announced that the work to declare the 78,024 hectares protected has been completed and gazetted.

He says work is advanced to invest US$49 million over the next five years into sustainable management of the protected area.

The government has identified 16 other areas of Jamaica which will be declared 'ecologically sensitive' - a designation that will provide them with a greater level of protection against environmental concerns.

These areas, at which mining will not be allowed, include Great Bay in southwest St. Elizabeth and Dry Harbour Mountain in St. Ann.

The government and environmentalists have been on a collision course in relation to a planned mining licence for Bengal Developments Limited in the Dry Harbour Mountain.

Mr. Holness says in the upcoming financial year, the government will also move forward with the protection of the Pedro Cays and surrounding waters.

Some 88,200 hectares of land and marine area are to be protected.
