Chairman of the Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission, Sir Kenneth Hall, is recommending a different approach to settling internal disputes at tertiary level institutions.
Sir Kenneth, who is a former Principal of the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, made the recommendation in light of the dispute between staff and the administration of the University of Technology (UTECH).
“I recommend to all parties, the principles to which we adopted, we are part of the same institution, we will settle our disputes internally ..….the point that I am emphasizing is that UTECH is too important to be simply focused on its divisions,”
He said this approach worked while he was Principal at the UWI.
Unions which represent staff at UTECH, on Wednesday gave Minister of Education Ronald Thwaites, seven days to take action in response to reports of poor governance at the institution.
However, Thwaites says due process must be followed and urged the unions to take a non-confrontational approach to the matter.
