The Jamaica Medical Doctors Association (JMDA) has reported that its members are struggling to keep up with the rise in COVID-19 cases amid reports that hospitals are running out of bed space.
With the Ministry of Health & Wellness reporting that 149 COVID-19 patients are now in hospital, JMDA President Mindi Fitz-Henley told Radio Jamaica News that some doctors are suffering burnout.
She characterized the situation faced by doctors as “a constant battle since last year,” noting that “although they are treating the patients as best as could be, and they continue to work, no matter what, they are exhausted.”
Dr Fitz-Henley said the problem stems, in part, from the fact that some COVID-19 patients are not following the designated protocols, returning to work while they are still sick,” and so other persons are exposed.”
She concurred with the view being expressed by some observers that measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 are no longer effective.
Accordingly, she said it appeared that “additional restrictions may need to be placed… it does appear that what is happening right now does not seem to be as effective as it once was.”
