The police have identified the driver of the Range Rover involved in Monday morning's crash in Christiana, Manchester which claimed the life of ten-year-old Traevon Sanchez and injured his mother, a police officer.

The crash occurred about 7 o'clock along Sedburgh main road.

It's reported that Constable Cobrina Crawford was transporting the grade six student to Christiana Leased Primary and Infant School when the driver of the Range Rover overtook a line of traffic and slammed into their vehicle.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary McKenzie, head of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, told Radio Jamaica News that the driver left the scene following the crash.

"The police are aware of who was driving it, and we are in pursuit. We definitely appeal to that person to hand over yourself to the police," he said, adding that the police's investigation will continue.

Constable Crawford is in critical condition at hospital.

The Jamaica Police Federation has sent out an urgent appeal for blood for the policewoman who is attached to the Christiana Police Station.

ACP McKenzie said since the start of the year, 247 people have died in road crashes.

In the meantime, Minister of Transport Daryl Vaz has sympathised with the families of the victims.

"Very sad that on the first day of school, we have already lost one student in a traffic accident. Very, very distraught about it. Condolences to the entire family, school family, and of course, hoping and praying for the mother's recovery," he lamented.

Mr. Vaz said he is hoping to make a statement regarding rural school buses when Parliament resumes.

"I am in the final stages now of making a presentation to the Ministry of Finance and the Cabinet, as it is going to require substantial intervention from the government to fund such a rural school bus programme," the minister admitted.

The Ministry of Education has dispatched its Region 5 Guidance Counselling team to provide immediate support to the school family of ten-year-old Traevon Sanchez.

The ministry said its team will be on-site at Christiana Leased Primary and Infant School to offer assistance to students, teachers, and staff as they navigate this period of mourning.
