Efforts being made to provide long term employment for 147 doctors

A last ditch attempt is being made by the Ministry of  Health & Wellness to find positions for the 147 doctors whose employment contracts expire tomorrow.

Following Tuesday's meeting with the Jamaica Medical Doctors Association (JMDA) news came last night that the ministry and its regional health authorities will explore whether there are vacancies in the public healthcare system that could be filled by the doctors.

A statement from the ministry says during the meeting the parties also discussed whether there was a breach of  the Heads of  Agreement between the Association and the Government with the issuing of  short-term contracts to some doctors.

Officials of  the ministry and the JMDA will meet again today to look at individual cases in which doctors were offered six and one-year contracts.
This is to ascertain if  there are anomalies relating to the heads of  agreement and take remedial actions.

The parties also discussed outstanding gratuity payments to doctors.

A settlement of the matter is expected by the end of  August.
