Falmouth Mayor pledges prompt removal of garbage

Mayor of Falmouth Colin Gager says the Trelawny Municipal Corporation and the National Solid Waste Management Authority are working to clear the pile-up of garbage in the vicinity of the Falmouth Market.

The Trelawny Health Department had served notice on the municipal body three weeks ago to clear the mound of garbage or face closure of the market.

Mayor Gager told Radio Jamaica News that a clean-up exercise was undertaken following the notice to remove the waste.

He says since the onset of the holidays there has been another accumulation of garbage, which the municipality and the solid waste authority will be working together to clear.

Vendors have been complaining that the inconsistent clearing of the garbage has resulted in an infestation of rodents which is affecting their ability to sell and causing them mounting losses.

The Falmouth Mayor has sought to assure that the municipality will be moving quickly to address the concerns of the vendors to ensure a healthy environment.
