Fewer teacher resignations

Education Minister Fayval Williams

Education Minister Fayval Williams says there are fewer teachers tendering resignations this year compared with last year.

Some 854 teachers left the classroom between January and September 2023.

So far this year, the minister said, 102 fewer teachers have resigned when compared with the same period last year.

School administrators have been grappling with a shortage of teachers, a situation which has intensified in recent years as educators are recruited for what they consider to be more lucrative jobs overseas.

Minister Williams said the government is still considering the recruitment of teachers from other countries to fill the gaps.

"To date, we only have our usual cadre of Cuban teachers and others that were in the system before. There has not been any new recruitment of teachers from other countries. There have been talks, there have been discussions, but our system continues now, as we speak today, to have the same countries that we've always had."

The ministry has said it is engaged in talks to recruit teachers from Nigeria, Ghana, the Philippines and India.

Twenty-nine new Cuban teachers recently joined the local education sector after being recruited under a bilateral agreement between the governments of Jamaica and Cuba.
