The campaign against certain fees charged by commercial banks has taken a new twist.
The man leading the movement, Member of Parliament for St Catherine Southern Fitz Jackson, has disclosed that he has taken preparatory steps to starting legal proceedings in relation to the matter. He is also exploring the possibility of whether criminal charges could be laid in the matter based on the actions of the banks.
Mr Jackson's position is that the banks should not be charging fees for merely keeping the deposits of their customers, as this is a breach of the duty of care under the Banking Services Act. He announced yesterday that he will be seeking to recover all the funds taken by the banks as fees for dormant accounts.
