A four-year-old girl perished in a reported house fire in Dean Pen, Highgate, St. Mary on Tuesday morning.
Soraya Kowen is dead and her mother hospitalised in serious condition after fire destroyed their dwelling.
Other family members who were in the house at the time of the fire, have also been hospitalised.
The fire was reportedly set after a molotov cocktail was thrown through a window of the house.
Deputy Superintendent Kevin Francis, acting commander for the St. Mary Police, said the police are investigating a case of arson in relation to the incident.
Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Tuesday afternoon, DSP Francis confirmed that a person of interest has been taken into custody.
He said the investigation is continuing but the police "do not wish to say much to prejudice this investigation".
DSP Francis said the police have visited with the family and offered grief counselling.
