Garbage collectors robbed at gunpoint in St. Andrew

Audley Gordon, Executive Director of the NSWMA

The Half Way Tree Police are investigating an incident in which a gunman held up and robbed a group of garbage collectors in St. Andrew on Thursday.

The four employees of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) were collecting garbage on Clieveden Avenue in St. Andrew about 2:00 p.m. when the gunman rode up on a motorcycle.

Radio Jamaica News has obtained CCTV footage which shows the gunman accosting the garbage collectors.

One of the crew members ran.

The gunman then robbed the other employees of their cellular phones.

Audley Gordon, Executive Director of the NSWMA, on Thursday night condemned the incident, noting that the garbage collectors are "from the lowliest of backgrounds on the socioeconomic ladder [and] can't deal with this kind of burden."

He urged persons who think to commit these crimes to "stop it."

Mr. Gordon said he will be meeting with the four employees on Friday. Additionally, he said the entity will be seeking counselling for the workers to "talk them through this dark moment."
