The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday issued a firm warning that global solidarity is required to overcome the coronavirus pandemic.

Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, who was speaking at the World Government Summit Virtual Health Forum, outlined how the world is now paying the price for its lack of preparedness to combat the virus, and stressed nations must work together for mutual security.

"Ultimately, the pandemic has shown that we are one humanity and none of us are safe until all of us are safe. This is a lesson that we must learn anew and that we must learn together. WHO remains committed to working with all countries to create the healthier, safer, fairer world that our children and grandchildren deserve," he said.

Dr. Tedros said the pandemic is still accelerating, and pointed to the three months it took for the first one million cases to be reported, compared with the eight days for the last one million cases.

The WHO reported a record increase in global cases yesterday, with the total rising by 183,020 in a 24-hour period.

The previous record for new daily cases was 181,232 on June 18.

The daily report showed the biggest rise in North and South America, as 116,000 new cases were confirmed.

The WHO said global cases are now on the cusp of passing nine million, with more than 468,000 deaths.
