Gordon Town, Mavis Bank residents protest delayed road repairs

Residents of Gordon Town and Mavis Bank in St. Andrew on Monday morning protested along the Gordon Town main road to express dissatisfaction with the delay in repairing the road and the alternative Savage Pen route.

The placard bearing protesters bemoaned the challenges they have been experiencing since the breakaway and subsequent closure of the Gordon Town road following heavy rains in November.

The residents say the Savage Pen route is not a good alternative due to it being steep.

Leah Johnson, a resident of Top Road in Mavis Bank told Radio Jamaica News the long drive along the Savage Pen road takes her more than two hours, which is especially frustrating for her as a small farmer.

The National Works Agency has said rehabilitation of the Savage Pen road has been delayed until later this week.

The agency has also warned that it will be challenging for some vehicles to manoeuvre.

Juliet Holness, Member of Parliament for St. Andrew East Rural, had said last week that the contract to repair the Gordon Town road is expected to be approved by Cabinet today.
