Governance in Jamaica heading in right direction with increase in women MPs - Wedderburn

Judith Wedderburn

Women's rights advocate Judith Wedderburn says governance in Jamaica is heading in the right direction with the increase in the number of women elected in Thursday's polls.

Fourteen women from the Jamaica Labour Party and four from the People's National Party were declared winners.

"I certainly would like to congratulate first of all the parties for nominating women to run and, in particular, commending the JLP for finding certainly a significantly larger number of younger women. That's a good sign," she asserted.

During the National Debate, both Leader of the Opposition Dr. Peter Phillips and Prime Minister Andrew Holness also committed to having more women in the Senate.

Mrs Wedderburn has challenged women to hold their respective parties to this promise.

"So, we have to watch and see how do the female MPs respond to this. I certainly am anticipating that they will step up to the plate as new members of parliament and advocate within their own party those commitments made in that debate, so that we can see an equally impressive increased number of women in the Senate representing both parties," she said.

She challenged the parties to fulfill this promise as the "first expressed demonstration that they are working towards gender equality in the Parliament and in the Senate."
