Aubyn Hill
There has been one approved shipment of cannabis from Canada into Jamaica.
In responding to questions during the sitting of the Standing Finance Committee on Wednesday, Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Senator Aubyn Hill confirmed that there had been a request from Canada to export cannabis to Jamaica.
He further explained that the application met the required standards under an existing trade agreement between the two countries.
"We were obliged to consider it and we considered it. It met the requirements, and because Canada is an outstanding trading partner of Jamaica, it was allowed to come through in the normal way so we followed the law," Mr. Hill admitted.
During the Standing Finance Committee meeting on Wednesday, Opposition Member of Parliament Anthony Hylton had questioned Minister Hill about the policy on importing cannabis to Jamaica.
In a statement before the sitting, Mr. Hylton said he was concerned about the what he described as the reported decision of Jamaica's Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA) to approve the importation of cannabis from Canada into Jamaica.
He also noted there have been several attempts to legally export cannabis and cannabis products from Jamaica to the Canadian market but these have been met with resistance, including trade barriers.
However, Minister Hill refuted assertions that there has been any restriction on Jamaican cannabis exports to Canada.
