Grenada amending Immigration Act to increase fines for breaches

Grenada's Immigration Act is being amended to, among other things, significantly increase the fine for persons who breach the law.

The amendment will also include an additional offence for people who help others to flout the regulations.

Currently, a person who is guilty of violating the Immigration Act can be fined a maximum EC$3,000 or sentenced to six months in prison.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Grenadian police have reported an increase in the number of persons illegally entering the country.

Commissioner of Police Edvin Martin recently reported that for the first quarter of 2021, law enforcement intercepted 15 illegal immigrants.

There were only 20 illegal entries recorded for all of 2020.
