Dr. Morais Guy

Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr. Morais Guy is in support of the stance of the Ministry of Health to await the results of tests on an individual who died after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, before attempting to link the death with the medicine.

The disclosure about the death was made by the ministry on Wednesday.

Dr. Guy gave his position in an interview with Radio Jamaica News on Thursday morning, noting that the death may just be coincidental.

He added he was not concerned that so far there have been 76 notifications of adverse reactions from the AstraZeneca vaccine, considering that more than 135,000 people have been inoculated.

Dr. Guy argued that the number of adverse reactions is not significant, especially since there are "probably about...less than 10 persons who have had severe cause for concern." The rest, he said, "have had like allergic reactions or other minor reactions to it."

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor McKenzie has said it should be expected that as more people get vaccinated, some will die from other conditions.

She has pledged that the Ministry of Health will be transparent about all reports of adverse effects.

Get Johnson & Johnson vaccine

In the meantime, Dr. Guy said the Government should still procure the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine despite reports of extremely rare blood clotting in some persons.

He argued that all vaccines have the potential "to cause some amount of blood clot" but he would not recommend stopping the vaccination programme "because the benefits of the vaccine far outweigh any complications that may arise."

The AstraZeneca vaccine, which is currently being in Jamaica's vaccination drive, has also been linked to rare blood clots.

Denmark has halted use of the AstraZeneca vaccine due to these concerns.
