Health Ministry warns of likely rise in respiratory viruses, urges public to stay safe

By Prince Moore

The Ministry of Health & Wellness is warning that there is an expected increase in the circulation of respiratory viruses and an attendant rise in the number of people seeking medical care as it becomes cooler towards the end of the year.

The ministry says already, the country is experiencing increased visits to hospital emergency departments from various conditions such as trauma and uncontrolled chronic diseases, including mental illnesses associated with the holiday season.

Members of the public are therefore being asked to take all necessary precautions to keep themselves and their families safe.

The health ministry is urging people to practice healthy lifestyle habits such as a balanced diet, exercise, and adequate rest; taking medications regularly and keeping appointments for regular checkups and necessary investigations.

Members of the public are also being advised to monitor situations that can lead to interpersonal violence and avoid or de-escalate conflicts. Road users are being reminded to take precautions to avoid accidents or injuries.

Persons are also being told to stay home if they are ill, seek medical care early if symptoms are severe or persistent and wash and sanitize hands frequently.

The Ministry of Health says persons visiting hospitals and health centres should remember that there is still a mask policy for these facilities.
