JCAA increases monitoring of air traffic controllers

The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) has increased its supervision of Air Traffic Controllers, following Monday’s suggestion that there may be more unrest.

The Jamaica Air Traffic Controllers Association (JATCA) held a press conference on Monday, at which it explained that while its members have been ordered to resume duties, they will only carry out their contractually assigned tasks. JATCA also stated that it will implement what's known as Flow Control Measures, which may cause delays for passengers.

Colonel Oscar Darby, Director-General of the Civil Aviation Authority, disclosed on Monday afternoon that the threat of industrial action had caused the entity to take certain steps.

"The CAAA will step up with its monitoring of the service being provided to ensure that it is being provided in accordance with the operational requirements of our air traffic service manual of operations. Whenever there is industrial action, it requires more oversight by the regulatory branch of the civil aviation authority, and we will do that," said Colonel Darby.

Colonel Darby is also warning air traffic controllers that this not only breaches their licenses, but a court order as well. The Director-General was speaking on RJR's Beyond The Headlines.

Meanwhile, despite the tension existing between the Civil Aviation Authority and JATCA, Colonel Derby affirmed that the JCAA was still willing to continue negotiations with the air traffic controllers.
