JEF rejects call to re-introduce Work-From-Home orders amid COVID-19 spike

David Wan

The Jamaica Employers' Federation is not supporting a call for the government to re-institute Work-From-Home orders following the rise in COVID-19 cases.

President of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions, Helene Davis-Whyte made the call on Thursday stating it might be necessary despite the disruptions it would cause.

JEF President David Wan said many companies already have a large number of employees working from home.

“A good number of the people who are able to work from home in our membership are already doing so. I think of the financial institutions…I think in some of the other sectors, there are a lot more essential workers and I think it’s going to be up to each company to make an assessment,” Mr. Wan noted.

He said he supports more targeted approaches to tackling the surge.

“I believe the authorities are taking the right approach in that they’re looking at the areas with the high number of cases. And doing what they need to do in terms of monitoring and contact tracing in those areas,” Mr. Wan said.
