The Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) is urging that there be stricter oversight of the country's bauxite-alumina industry.
This comes in the wake of the precautionary measures granted by the Inter American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in favour of persons living in mining-affected communities of St. Ann
The granting of a precautionary measure means the commission has unearthed issues that will lead to irreparable harm being suffered by the affected people.
Dr Theresa Rodriguez-Moodie, CEO of JET, said on Monday that the Jamaican Government has ignored two attempts by the Commission to obtain additional information.
Dr Rodriquez -Moodie, addressing the matter on Monday's edition of Beyond the Headlines, asserted that oversight of the industry needs to be strengthened.
She's therefore urging the government to engage with all interested parties to devise measures to address the concerns raised by the IACHR.
ABOUT THE IACHR: The IACHR is a principal and autonomous organ of the Organization of American States, with a mandate to promote and protect human rights in the American hemisphere.
