JPS working to restore power to thousands of customers

JPS working to restore power to thousands of customers

The Jamaica Public Service Company says its crews are now working to restore electricity to several communities following the bad weather affecting the island.

As many as 65,000 customers lost power on Wednesday in what the JPS described as an extreme wind event.

The heavy winds and rain downed trees and power lines in the parishes of St. Catherine, Kingston and St. Andrew, and Clarendon. Manchester and St. Elizabeth have also been affected by power outages.

JPS Director of Corporate Communications Winsome Callum cautioned that heavy rain and strong winds are preventing its teams from restoring supply to some of the affected communities.

"Unfortunately, the progress of restoration has slowed down somewhat because of the persistent rain. However, we continue to make every effort to get supply back to our customers as quickly as possible, and we ask for patience as we try to this as safely as possible," she said.
