JTA displeased no Education Minister appointed

JTA President Jasford Gabriel and Press Secretary Naomi Francis

The Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) has expressed concern that nearly a week after the Holness administration was re-elected, the country is yet to hear who will be the Minister of Education.

JTA President Jasford Gabriel has expressed disappointment that Prime Minister Andrew Holness is yet to fill the post.

Speaking Thursday afternoon at a Rotary Club meeting, Mr. Gabriel said the appointment of an education minister is urgent especially with schools scheduled to reopen on October 5 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Gabriel argued that an Education Minister is needed to navigate the sector.

On Monday, four ministers were appointed shortly after Prime Minister Andrew Holness was sworn in.

Dr. Nigel Clarke, Dr. Horace Chang, Dr. Christopher Tufton and Kamina Johnson Smith were appointed to their previous portfolios.

The office of the prime Minister has not given a date for the announcement of the rest of the Cabinet.

However, Press Secretary Naomi Francis has said it will be done soon.
