Labour Ministry intervenes to stave off protests at NWC

The Ministry of Labour has intervened in the dispute between the National Water Commission (NWC) and its managers.

The Ministry has called the parties to a meeting on Wednesday in a bid to stave off industrial action by the more than 200 managers.

This followed a 5-day ultimatum issued by the managers who warned that they could not guarantee normality at the utility company following the Easter holidays.

Radio Jamaica News spoke with President of the University and Allied Workers Union, Lambert Brown, who is representing the NWC Executive Staff Association.

“The dispute is over the company’s failure too agree to pay the four percent increase to the workers pending the outcome of  further discussions on a single item in the wage claim. That item is related to call outs and the company has said they want changes, the workers have said the managers have said that they are not for the changes ….there is a dispute and we look forward to attending the meeting next Wednesday in an attempt to avoid industrial action,” he said.

He warned that if the managers walk off the job it will severely cripple the operations of the NWC.
