Legislation is being developed to guide Jamaica's social enterprise sector.
Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Investment & Commerce Dr. Norman Dunn has disclosed consultation is taking place, in order to make a submission to Cabinet on the matter.
The legal framework is being developed by the Ministry and the Planning Institute of Jamaica, with support from the European Union.
Dr. Dunn says the relevant statute, when implemented, will allow participants in the sector to benefit from opportunities offered to other companies in the formal economy.
The framework will also cover social enterprises raising capital via the Jamaica Social Stock Exchange and other means of financing.
He says, to address social and environmental issues, the development of a social enterprise sector will also assist in evaluating investment opportunities in the wider economy.
