Charges have been laid against the female vendor seen in a viral video urinating in a bottle near the Charles Gordon Market in Montego Bay, St. James.

Sherika Lewis, the acting chief public health inspector for the St. James Public Health Services, said the woman will appear before the court at the end of September.

Ms. Lewis revealed that the woman is facing six charges, including having no food handler's permit, contaminating food items as well as the vehicle used to transport food.

After the video surfaced in early August, the woman was barred from plying her trade.

The elderly woman was captured urinating in a half-cut plastic bottle, then pouring the contents into a whole plastic bottle, before returning to her business without appearing to wash her hands.

Her identity was not released.

It's reported that she had been selling ground provisions and fruits at the time of the incident.

Market sanitation issues

Meanwhile, Ms. Lewis said the health department is perturbed by the health risks and sanitation issues at the market.

She also expressed worry about the state of the fish market, where she said there was a lack of security and pet proofing, making the area accessible to loiterers, stray animals, scavengers.

Ms. Lewis said the health department will be facilitating a food handler's training and workshop for all vendors.

The two-day initiative will take place on October 23 and 30.

She urged vendors not to be concerned if they are unable to read and write, as assistance will be provided.
