Chief Executive Officer of the May Pen Hospital, Nadia Nunes, has provided details on the near crisis situation facing the institution which has forced it to begin accepting only emergency cases.
The RJR News Centre reported yesterday that the hospital has been overrun by patients seeking care. This has depleted critical medical supplies. Persons with less serious illnesses have had to wait days to get medical attention.
Miss Nunes confirmed that the hospital is only accepting emergency cases, because it has reached its limit. The situation will impact persons planning to use the facilities. Meanwhile, Miss Nunes has outlined that the present conditions are exceptional and not the norm.
Chairman of the Southern Region Health Authority, Michael Stewart, has outlined steps being taken at the May Pen Hospital in Clarendon to address a major shortage of bed space. Our news centre yesterday reported that the situation was near crisis level.
Mr. Stewart says efforts are being made to obtain more beds for the hospital. Arrangements are also being made to transfer some of the less critical cases to another facility. And Mr Stewart disclosed that other hospitals under the management of the Regional Health Authority are also facing challenges.
