Mentally ill man imprisoned for over 20 years without trial, freed

Attorney Yushaine Morgan, who represented Abraham Lawrence

Abraham Lawrence, the mentally ill man who languished in prison for more than 20 years without trial, was on Friday freed when he appeared before the St. Elizabeth Parish Court.

The 49 year old, who was granted bail last Friday, was freed after the clerk of court made a no order application.

Presiding Senior Parish Judge Anne Marie Lawrence Granger, in accepting the application, encouraged Mr. Lawrence's brother to ensure that he receives the necessary follow-up treatment and counselling.

Mr. Lawrence was represented in court by Yushaine Morgan.

Mr. Morgan told Radio Jamaica News that he is pleased with the ruling, considering if Mr. Lawrence had been tried and found guilty, "he would have gotten a suspended sentence or far less time than he had spent."

The attorney said Mr. Lawrence is relieved to be free and is getting support from his family and community.
