Merl Grove High being investigated for COVID breaches after holding mass gathering

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton

Answers are being sought from the administration of the Merl Grove High School in St. Andrew after scores of students gathered at the institution on Thursday for a valedictory service.

This was in breach of the public gathering limit which remains at 10.

Radio Jamaica News has obtained video footage showing a large gathering of about 200 Merl Grove students inside the auditorium.

Most of the students wore masks.

The students were addressed by several individuals during the event.

During a news conference on Thursday, Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton said he was not aware of special permission being given to schools to hold events above the gathering limit.

However, he said he would speak with Minister of Education Fayval Williams to find out if special provisions were made. "And if it is in breach of the rules, then clearly it would enhance the risk of spread and that is something that we would have to take a decision on," he noted.

Radio Jamaica News tried unsuccessfully to get a response from the chairman and principal of Merl Grove High.

Calls to their mobile phones went unanswered.
