Ministry discussing ways to re-engage thousands of students left out of education system since pandemic

Acting Chief Education Officer Dr. Kasan Troupe

The Education Ministry is discussing intervention strategies for the more than 100,000 students who have been absent from the education system since last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Acting Chief Education Officer Dr. Kasan Troupe says attention is being given to re-engaging the students.

Dr. Troupe disclosed that some parents have informed schools that their children will return and repeat their grade.

"It means therefore that we will have to respond in the best interest of the students and to see how best we can accommodate these students and to make sure that they are back into the learning environment," she said, noting that other students in similar positions would also have to repeat their grade because because they have been out of the school system for such an extended period.

Dr. Troupe was speaking Thursday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines.

It's reported that more than 120,000 students across Jamaica have been absent from classes since the start of the pandemic.

Education Minister Fayval Williams attributed this high level of truancy to several factors, including no face-to-face classes being held by schools and teaching becoming accessible primarily online.
