MOE promising smooth sailing for May salary payment for teachers

The Ministry of Education is promising that measures are being implemented to prevent a delayed payment to teachers for the month of May.

Frustration has been growing among the island's teachers over the continued delay in the payment of their salaries.

The teachers experienced delays in March and April, with the Jamaica Teachers Association expressing that it was not notified by the Education Ministry that teachers would be paid late.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Education Ministry, Maureen Dwyer, apologised to the educators yesterday for the lack of communication.

She says the ministry did not anticipate the delay in the system for a second straight month.

She explains that the ministry had difficulty calculating the payments due to teachers under the new compensation system.

Ms Dwyer says the ministry is anticipating a smooth process in the payment of salaries next month.

She was speaking yesterday on Beyond the Headlines.
