More police "boots on the ground" the primary factor in crime reduction, says Bunting

Opposition Spokesman on National Security Peter Bunting has pointed to the Government's decision to increase police presence in crime hotspots across the island as the major contributor to a reduction in major crimes.

Mr Bunting, addressing a recent meeting of the People's National Party (PNP) in Manchester, said the Parliamentary Opposition has been urging the Government to flood the streets with police in order to contain crime.

He also commented on the recent Sectoral Debate presentation by National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang during which the minister announced that more police would be deployed to the streets.

Having more "police boots on the ground" was what the Opposition had been recommending for three years, "and what we're beginning to see now is the benefit of the additional police personnel in the divisions that generate most of the violent crime."

It was therefore important to "focus on that; stop the propaganda, this big lie about State of Emergenccy; it is just a waste of resources and unnecessary suspension of people's constitutional rights," he declared.

More than 400 murders have been recorded in Jamaica so far this year.
