Member of Parliament Kerensia Morrison has expressed concern about the reduced sentences being handed to persons who plead guilty for certain crimes.

She was among MPs who spoke out against gender-based violence in the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon and expressed outrage at the killing of Khanice Jackson, the 20-year-old accounting clerk who was murdered in Portmore, St. Catherine.

Ms Morrison called for an amendment to the plea bargaining laws, which allow a reduction of up to 50 per cent of a sentence.

She argued if the law is to serve as a deterrent, "even if there is a reduction in the sentence for pleading guilty, the amount given must be reflective of the nature and severity of the offence."

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck said the issue of sentencing discounts would need to be further discussed by the parliament.

He also said legislation would be brought to parliament which would give the prosecution the ability to appeal sentences.
