NSWMA appeals for people to properly dispose of garbage

NSWMA Chairman Dennis Chung

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) is appealing to Jamaicans to properly dispose of their garbage, particularly over the Christmas period.

Chairman Dennis Chung says the agency has prepared for an expected increase in the amount of solid waste generated over the holiday period.

But he lamented that people do not dispose of their garbage responsibly, which makes the work of the authority more difficult.

"We clean the streets every single morning. It costs us billions of dollars every year to clean, to sweep up after people and by 9:30/10 o'clock, it has garbage all over it again," he complained.

While he acknowledged that the Christmas weekend will be busy and will require additional capacity, he urged the public to "be responsible and civic-minded about how you dispose of your garbage".
