The Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ) has adopted a defiant stance in relation to the Ministry of Finance & the Public Service, saying the ministry has been ignoring its obligation to commence salary negotiations with the nurses.
This development follows confirmation that the ministry had reached an agreement for a four per cent wage increase with the largest public sector union, the Jamaica Civil Service Association (JCSA).
That contrasts sharply with the position of the NAJ which says the finance ministry has not initiated negotiations with it nearly six months after its last wage and fringe benefits agreement expired.
NAJ President Patsy Edwards-Henry told Radio Jamaica News that, despite sending several letters to the ministry there has not yet been a meeting.
Radio Jamaica reported on Monday that the JCSA had accept the government's offer of four per cent pay increase.
It has communicated its position to the umbrella Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions.
In addition to the salary increase, there is a one-off payment of $40,000 for employees earning $1.5 million or less annually.
The JCTU and government are reportedly trying to complete arrangement this month for payment to commence in November.
