NWC outline measures to increase water supply to western Jamaica

Kevin Kerr, acting President, National Water Commission

Acting President of the National Water Commission, Kevin Kerr has outlined a series of measures to minimise the negative impact of low water levels in Western Jamaica.

Drought conditions are expected to worsen for Westmoreland and Hanover in the ensuing weeks.

Close to half a million gallons of water have already been trucked across the two parishes.

Mr Kerr said on Monday that the agency will be exploring all options for increasing the flow of water to consumers, including rapid detection and repair of leaks, and add eight more trucks in the effort to significantly increase the trucking of water.

Additionally, he revealed that the NWC will embark on a process of decalcicfication of the Great River water system; "washing sediments from the pipe, and this activity will bring an additional one million gallons per day, which we will dedicate solely for Hanover, and this water will reach as far as Green Island."

Mr Kerr was speaking at a press conference on the current drought conditions.
