The Opposition is calling for the immediate resignation of George Wright, Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Central, following the release of a video in which a man is seen assaulting a woman.

In the five minute video, a man is seen dragging, slapping and punching a woman a number of times in the head as they engage in a tussle.

Allegations have swirled that the man in the video is Mr. Wright, who is a first time MP elected in last September's general election.

Senator Donna Scott Mottley, Opposition Spokesperson on Justice and Gender Affairs, told Radio Jamaica News that she found the video "so traumatising that she could not watch it to the end."

"The brutal beating which this man administered on a female was alarming and I honestly was repulsed by it, that anybody could treat another human being like that.... Especially in light of the fact that we have been discussing violence against women over the last few weeks, the allegation that it was a member of parliament made it worse for me," she lamented.

The senator argued that no person who participates in such acts should be allowed to participate in passing legislation in parliament.

She noted that, in light of discussions in the Joint Select Committee on Sexual Harassment, the matter is "an opportunity for the government to demonstrate to the people how it truly feels."

Senator Scott Mottley said the Jamaica Constabulary Force must use all resources at its disposal to immediately investigate the issue.

The police have said both Mr. Wright and the unidentified woman have filed separate reports with the Hanover Police complaining of being assaulted.

The Hanover Police on Monday afternoon reported that they have been contacted by Mr. Wright's lawyer.

Detective Inspector Carl Brown, head of the criminal investigation division of the Hanover Police, told Radio Jamaica News that arrangements are being made to question Mr. Wright this week.

Swift consequences

Dr. Horace Chang, General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), has said if there is confirmation that Mr. Wright was involved in an alleged incident of assault, there will be swift consequences.

Acting on the instruction of JLP leader and Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Dr. Chang has asked Mr. Wright to immediately make himself available to the police who are investigating the incident.

In a news release, Dr. Chang said the JLP is treating the issue very seriously.
