Opposition wants answers on Ruel Reid's prolonged leave from Jamaica College

Opposition on Finance Julian Robinson

The Parliamentary Opposition has tabled questions in the House of  Representatives demanding answers about former Education Minister Ruel Reid's extended leave from his post as Principal of Jamaica College.

Mr. Reid is now before the courts on fraud charges, but continues to receive a salary from the St Andrew-based high school from which he was seconded for national duties in 2016.

Opposition Spokesman on Finance Julian Robinson tabled the questions asking, among other things, which entity is paying Mr. Reid's salary.

He argued that answers are needed in light of  media reports that Mr. Reid has applied for extension of  his leave of  absence until 2026.

Mr. Robinson said the current Education Minister, Fayval Williams, must indicate the type of  leave Mr. Reid is currently on and whether it was conditional on him being a Minister of Government.

He also wants to know the Ministry's policy on salaries and emoluments paid to teachers and principals who are arrested and charged, and are facing the courts.
