Plans for new correctional facility in central Jamaica outlined

Plans have been outlined for the construction of a new correctional facility amid growing concern about the deterioration of the Tower Street and St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centres.

It will be situated in central Jamaica.

This was disclosed last night by National Security Minister Robert Montague. The process has started with the reduction of the prisoner population at both maximum security facilities.
He was speaking during the sitting of  Parliament's Standing Finance Committee which is reviewing the 2018/2019 Budget.

Concern has mounted about the dilapidated state of the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre after tunnels were found at the compound on February 16.

The Jamaica Federation of  Corrections sent a letter to the National Security Minister on Monday arguing the need for the construction of a new prison.

A copy of the letter was also delivered to the Office of the Prime Minister. The Federation is hoping to receive a response in two weeks.
