The Opposition People's National Party has called for Prime Minister Andrew Holness to step aside as the Director of Corruption Prosecution prepares to rule on conflict of interest allegations against him.
Prime Minister Holness has been referred to the Director of Corruption Prosecution after the Integrity Commission concluded that he may have influenced the awarding of contracts during his tenure as Education Minister.
Opposition Leader Mark Golding has called for the Prime Minister to do what he terms "the right thing" by taking a leave of absence while the probe is under way.
"Mr. Holness cannot credibly remain in office as Prime Minister of our country in these circumstances," Mr. Golding said, insisting his absence is the minimum action required at this time.
He said the image of the country has been undermined in the international community and among Jamaica's key development partners, adding that the allegations are an embarrassment for the Jamaican people.
He urged the Prime Minister not to "hold on to his office tenaciously" but to step away for the good of the people until the probe is resolved.
