Senior Superintendent Wayne Joseph, head of the Westmoreland Police, and the mother of the five-year-old

The police say the investigation into the case of the man accused of sexually abusing his five-year-old sister in Negril, Westmoreland is being expedited with a view to laying charges.

The 29-year-old man was picked up during an operation on Tuesday night in the Whithorn area of the parish.

Senior Superintendent Wayne Joseph, head of the Westmoreland Police, says the man will soon be questioned but some "checks and balances" first have to be done to "put together [an] airtight case against him".

SSP Joseph commended the mother of the five-year-old girl for quickly alerting the authorities to the case, noting that many parents instead ignore the signs or complaints from children.

He appealed to parents to pay close attention to their children so they will be able to detect if "anything strange or unusual happens" and take action as soon as posible.

The mother of the five-year-old girl has expressed relief that the suspect, her own son, has been taken into police custody.

"I feel grateful to Father God, the police, the citizens of Jamaica. We coping now as we hear that he get caught, so everybody, I try to tell them thanks."

She again urged parents not to let their guard down, even around family members or friends.

The woman said medical checks conducted on a two-year-old girl, who was also at the home, revealed that she was not harmed by the suspect.
