Police ordered to address all station reports

The Police High Command is moving to ensure there is no repeat of an incident in which a woman was turned away from a police station and later killed.

The woman was killed after being told to leave a St. Catherine station because of what she was wearing.

The matter has been addressed in this week's Force Orders.  There were howls of condemnation last month in the wake of the killing of 31-year-old Melonie Johnson shortly after being turned away from a police station because the officer on duty deemed that she was inappropriately dressed.

Now the High Command is removing to ensure that there is no repeat.

The instructions in this week's Force Orders refer to directives promulgated in Force Orders Number 2480 dated December 15, 1994, and insisted on strict compliance.

The High Command stressed that irrespective of the mode of dress and appearance of persons making reports at stations, the reports must be taken, assessed and acted upon.

The High Command also stressed that members of the public making a report must be accommodated and attended since the matter may constitute an emergency or other life-threatening situations.

The Force Order urged Commanding Officers to ensure that this directive is brought to the attention of all members under their command by way of lectures for the next four weeks.

Miss Johnson was reportedly killed shortly after returning to her community after being turned away from the station.

Following the incident a Detective Sergeant attached to the Caymanas Station in Gregory Park was placed on interdiction.

The interdiction order was reportedly served on him last week, on the Police Commissioner's instruction.

The policeman is now on three quarters salary, and will remain off active duty, while an investigation is conducted into the incident.
