PSOJ president says new curfew hours will slowdown economic activities

President of the Private Sector Organization of  Jamaica (PSOJ), Keith Duncan, says the tightening of the curfew hours for Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine, and Clarendon will slowdown economic activities in the country.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness yesterday announced the new curfew period due to a spike in the number of coronavirus cases in those parishes.

It takes effect today and will run from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. daily until September 2.

In an interview with Radio Jamaica News this morning, Mr. Duncan said Jamaicans need to observe the COVID-19 protocols to flatten the curve.

He says this will allow the Government to ease the restrictions, which would spur economic growth.

Meanwhile, Mr. Duncan says he does not believe that the Government should close the country's borders despite the Jamaica Constabulary Force reporting that some returning residents and visitors have been violating the self-quarantine rules.

Under the COVID-19 protocols, all returning residents are required to abide by the 14-day quarantine order where they are only allowed to leave home once per day to carry out basic needs, such as obtaining food or medical supplies.

Head of the Constabulary Communications Unit (CCU), Senior Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, said some of the returning residents have not downloaded the JamCOVID19, which allows the police to monitor their movements.
