Public health expert proposes gov't offer cash prizes to increase vaccine uptake

Alverston Bailey, Associate Professor at UTech's School of Public Health

Alverston Bailey, Associate Professor at UTech's School of Public Health, has suggested that the government adopt the vaccination model used in Cayman of offering cash prizes in a vaccination raffle, in order to increase take up of the COVID-19 medication.

The Cayman Islands Tourism Association has offered Caymanians a chance to win US$10,000, as well as 280 other prizes worth US$15,000 as part of an initiative to encourage people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

He believes a similar method could be applied in Jamaica to help reduce vaccine hesitancy.

"In Cayman, the success rate has in some sectors been over 90 per cent. I am suggesting a weekly prize of say, J$100,000 for all those who participate in this raffle, plus a number of consolation prizes for all those who get vaccinated by the end of December. This could be sponsored by the NHF or the private sector," he suggested.

Professor Bailey recommended that persons' names could be added to a raffle box after they become vaccinated and "each week, a name is removed from that particular box and the winner is declared." He said the main prize could be $100,000 and other consolation prizes given "for being a good citizen and getting vaccinated."
